Catalog Description
Basic skills and techniques in representational drawing. Subjects including the human figure, architectural interiors and exteriors, landscapes and cityscapes. Black and white and dry color media. Outside assignments required.
NAAB Criteria: (2) graphic skills
Educational Goals and Objectives
· To begin a vocabulary in visual communication
· To equip each student with basic drawing skills and an understanding of how these skills can be applied in describing form/space ideas
· To search for meaning in drawings of existent things which will aid in the visualization of non-existent things (imagined designs)
· To develop habits of investigating multiple avenues of thought quickly
· To emphasize the importance of selectivity in the drawing
· To foster self-reliance in each student
· To illustrate through the organization of the course a continuity between learning experiences
The course intent in terms of the knowledge and/or skills to be imparted includes the following:
· Ability to structure and organize elements of design (line, value, shape, size, texture, direction, color) with the application of principles of design (balance, harmony, repetition, gradation, dominance, alternation, contrast, unity) into representational drawings expressing form and space
· Ability to use freehand perspective with confidence
· Ability to analyze and construct drawings of architectural places, exteriors and interiors
· Ability to relate the human figure into the architectural environment
· Ability to master techniques of several black and white media including pencil, ink and introduction to color with dry media
Course Organization and Procedure
A studio does not operate upon a daily class plan for all teachers or for all sections. Several teachers are involved with this course; each has flexibility in presentation of materials. However, each teacher is expected to cover basic ideas expressed in the outline of the course. Out-of-class assignments require approximately three hours weekly. These exercises correspond to studio projects which are developed during 6 contact hours each week. Civility, good manners and use of common sense are expected in the classroom at all times, including after hours. The studio is a tobacco and gun free environment. Entertainment devices, including TV and radios, require headphones at all hours except under direct supervision of instructor. The use of spray paint or aerosol products of any kind is not permitted anywhere in the Architecture Building. The stairwells are not to be used for smoking or painting. Students should not work on other class-work during a scheduled studio. Please turn off cell phones and pagers during class. Building Policy is posted in classrooms, please read!
Project Grading
Daily evaluations are expressed in studio environments as verbal critiques. Evaluations are made on individual progress and on comparison to standards of excellence set by present and past classes. Project grading policy is determined by individual instructors.
Attendance Policy
· In the case of excused absences, policy regarding make up work is determined by the instructor for each individual section.
· Absence due to religious observance - The Texas Tech University Catalog states that a student who is absent from classes for the observance of a religious holy day will be allowed to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time after the absence (p.48). Notification must be made in writing and delivered in person no later than the 15th class day of the semester.
· Absence due to officially approved trips – The Texas Tech University Catalog states that the person responsible for a student missing class due to a trip should notify the instructor of the departure and return schedule in advance of the trip. The student may not be penalized and is responsible for the material missed. (p.48)
· Whether an absence is excused or unexcused is determined solely by the instructor with the exception of absences due to religious observance and officially approved trips described above. The Center for Campus Life will notify faculty, at the student’s request, when a student is absent for four consecutive days with appropriate verification of a health related emergency. This notification does not excuse the student from class, it is provided as a courtesy. The service is explained as follows and can be found on the Center for Campus Life web site at: http://www.campuslife.ttu.edu/crisis/
The College of Architecture supports the definition of four absences as being excessive. Instructors may encourage the student drop the class if unexcused absences approach being excessive. In the delineation classes, points are deducted for late work at the discretion of the instructor. The final grade will be lowered one grade for each unexcused absence in excess of three absences. Excused absences are at the discretion of the instructor. If you must be absent, contact the instructor immediately. Do not wait until you receive a letter noting excessive absences from the academic dean.
Illness and Death Notification
The Center for Campus Life is responsible for notifying the campus community of student illnesses, immediate family deaths and/or student death. Generally, in cases of student illness or immediate family deaths, the notification to the appropriate campus community members occur when a student is absent from class for four (4) consecutive days with appropriate verification. It is always the student’s responsibility for missed class assignments and/or course work during their absence. The student is encouraged to contact the faculty member immediately regarding the absences and to provide verification afterwards. The notification from the Center for Campus Life does not excuse a student from class, assignments, and/or any other course requirements. The notification is provided as a courtesy.
Equal Opportunity and Access to Facilities
The University is committed to the principle that in no aspect of its programs shall there be differences in the treatment of persons because of race, creed, national origin, age, sex, or disability, and that equal opportunity and access to facilities shall be available to all.
Any student who, because of a disability, may require special arrangements in order to meet the course requirements should contact the instructor as soon as possible to make any necessary arrangements. Students should present appropriate verification from Student Disability Services during the instructor’s office hours. Please note instructors are not allowed to provide classroom accommodations to a student until appropriate verification from Student Disability Services has been provided. For additional information, you may contact the Student Disability Services office at 335 West Hall or 806-742-2405.
Academic Integrity/Academic Misconduct
“It is the aim of the faculty of Texas Tech University to foster a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity. The attempt of students to present as their own any work that they have not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a serious offense and renders the offenders liable to serious consequences, possibly suspension.”
Retention of Student Work
The College of Architecture reserves the rights to retain, exhibit, and reproduce work submitted by students. Work submitted for grade is the property of the College and remains such until it is returned to the student.
