Summer 2001:CDL Funded Research ($6,000)Project Manager/Principal Investigator:Ben K. Shacklette, AIAClient:Housing Authority for the City of LubbockProject Description:Working with the Lubbock Housing Authority the CDL produced a new site design, individual building unit designs, and project narrative to assist the Housing Authority in HUD Hope VI grant application requesting funds to demolish the existing 1960s housing project and redevelop the property and adjacent vacant areas into a community oriented affordable housing neighborhood. A key design objective was to provide a standard plan for two, three, and four bedroom homes that could accommodate several variations in façade design mirroring the best elements of existing adjacent neighborhoods. In response to the single-family character of the neighborhood, duplex units were designed to appear as individually built single-family dwellings. The proposed master plan incorporated differing placement opportunities for new units within a non-orthogonal arrangement providing an alternative to the traditional grid street layout, thus avoiding the "cookie-cutter" aesthetic often associated with conventional affordable housing developments. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
