Statement
As a practicing architect, I believe architecture is to be found in each project anew. There is no single design philosophy answering the demands and questions of today's complex world. However I believe architecture is to be found in the active process of making, and not necessarily residing only the made. Architects draw buildings. They are removed from the actual construction process, but I believe it is the architect's responsibility to resolve tectonic issues, to understand how a building goes together, and to know the difference between a joint and a connection.
As a teacher, I believe in the student-centered education of future architects, through the investigation of architectural issues arising from a student's individual concerns, design process, and design potential in relation to the development architectural project.
I pursue the renaissance ideal of the integration of architecture with related fields such as painting, poetry and music. From 1985 up to the present, I have undertaken extensive architectural travels in Europe, the United States and Japan. During those trips I have sketched, written, and photographed architecture, nature, and people in their cultural and social environment. I believe these travels have contributed largely to my education as an architect and a teacher.
As a researcher, I am interested in the history, changing nature, and significance of the architectural drawing in relation to the qualities of the architectural drawing in the electronic age. I am directing my research towards identifying how such an understanding of the architectural drawing can be meaningfully incorporated into the educational process of the architect.
The work presented here is the result of my creative activity over the last several years. My architectural philosophy resides in my work.
