Jaddo Studio

Project Description: Realism with Abstraction

In this studio the development of architectural design will be based on a combination of Realism (representation) with Abstraction (non-representation).

Realism will be explored through the study of complex physical familiar objects (toasters, coffee makers, binoculars, etc). The process utilized will involve measuring and drawing and will lead to understanding the vocabulary of architectural drawing, basic composition and graphic design.

Abstraction will be explored by multiple methods such as shifting scales, geometric manipulation, and color and texture studies.

By merging realism and abstraction a two dimensional drawing will be distilled. This drawing will form the basis for the development of relief studies and later for the construction three dimensional models.

I will approach this process primarily from my perspective as an artist. I expect abstract results that are not based any on pre-conceived ideas of built form. I am an artist who works in both two and three dimensions, making “art for art’s sake”. There is no personal practical use for the art I make, except to satisfy my own need to make it. I will guide you in this studio with the expectation that at the end of the semester you will have developed an understanding of form making. This class is part of a cumulative process. You will be expected to use your knowledge from your first year, whether of tools or drawing technique or color, as a basis for this year’s work.
