The primary purpose for offering graduate certificates is to meet the specialized education needs of professionals. A certificate of specialization can be obtained by taking the 15 hours of core courses approved for that specialization. Upon completion of the certificate course work, students will receive a “certificate of specialization” and notification on their transcript of program completion.

The College of Architecture provides a Master of Science in Architecture degree in three different focus areas, Historic Preservation, Visualization, and Community Development.

The certificate programs are administered in four specific ways:

  1. The certificate is earned within the 38 hours of core coursework required to complete the MS Arch degree program.
  2. Enrolled in any TTU graduate program.
  3. The certificate is earned in conjunction with the completion of the MArch degrees offered by the College of Architecture.
  4. The certificate can be earned by anyone with an approved undergraduate degree from any college or school at Texas Tech, or any other university in the world.

MArch students are required to complete the 15 core course hours in addition to the required courses for completion of that degree. MArch graduates that wish to pursue the MS Degree after receiving the MArch with the certificate can transfer in only six hours from the MArch certification and must complete 38 hours of approved course work to receive the MS Degree.

BSArch students can take up to nine hours of the certification within the last eighteen hours of undergraduate study that can be transferred toward the MS Degree if these nine hours are not used to fulfill the undergraduate degree requirements. BSArch students can also opt to take these nine hours as undergraduate electives within the last eighteen hours of BS coursework as counted elective courses, and complete an additional six hours of certification core courses after graduation, to receive the certificate.

Any student enrolled at TTU in any school or college can earn a certificate, as a Bachelor, Master, or PhD degree candidate under the same guidelines above having been accepted into the certificate program offered by the College of Architecture. The certificate is awarded only after completion of a first degree. Students may take graduate courses as an undergraduate if they are within 18 hours of completion of their degree.
