Urs Peter "Upe" Flueckiger with Saif Haq
Given: Monday October 16th 2023
Due: Monday November 20th 2023 Beginning of the Lecture.
Description:
Your mapping project is based on the documentary film of William H Whyte "Social
Life of Small Urban Spaces"
Similarly, as in the film, you are asked to observe a public space. You can
select outdoor space you see fit on the TTU campus.
You have four weeks + for this assignment. You need to make time outside of the
slotted lecture time for this project.
Format:
Document your mapping and observations on Letter size paper. Use as many sheets
as you see necessary. Start with drawing your
context: building outlines, entrance, stairs, benches, trees, etc. Your
drawings should be to proportion but not necessary to a specific scale. Hand
drawings and/or careful sketches are suggested. However, if you feel more
comfortable with digital drawings tools please feel free to use those.
After you have established your site drawing, you are asked to record Behavior
Patterns of People entering, waiting, or traversing
your chosen space. Record and represent the people's activities in a
legend/chart. Use various symbols & colors representing
peoples behavior. Also record and document time, date, and climate condition
during each mapping session.
Write a one to two page report after you completed your 5 observation/monitoring
sessions summarizing your field experience.
Please label your project with your name, class, section and semester on the
cover page. The cover page may include a photograph of your chosen site. Your
project has to be turned in person at the beginning of class. and as a minimum
contains 8 pages oriented Portrait.
